MEDICARE SAFETY NET
Medicare safety nets help to reduce your out-of-pocket costs for doctor visits and some tests and scans.
How does this work?
Once you have reached a certain amount of out-of-pocket costs (threshold) in a calendar year, Medicare will give you a higher rebate.
If you are enrolled in Medicare, you are eligible for Medicare safety net. There is no separate registration for this.
However, if you register as a family or a couple, your out-of-pocket costs will be combined. Thus you would reach the threshold much sooner. This requires a separate registration via Medicare.
Currently, the threshold (out-of-pocket cost you need to spend in a calendar year in order to receive the higher rebate) is $ 2414 ( Everyone in Medicare) and $770.30 (concession card holders).
If you have more questions about this, please visit the Services Australia website.
